Coloplast Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championship this Weekend

(London, ON) – The best wheelchair rugby teams in the country will battle for the national championship title at the 2014 Coloplast Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championships at Fanshawe College from May 16-18. Three Ontario teams will compete in two divisions.

“London and Dorchester are so supportive of wheelchair rugby and our athletes,” said wheelchair rugby national team member David Willsie. “I can’t think of a community in North America that gives us more support. Our athletes can’t wait to compete in front of a hometown crowd and hopefully bring home a national title to Ontario.”

This is an exciting time for the sport. Wheelchair rugby will be making its debut as a Parpan Am event in the summer of 2015 in Toronto.

Notable athletes competing at the 2014 Coloplast Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championships are:

  • National team athletes from Ontario, including David Willsie (Dorchester, ON), Garett Hickling (Dorchester, ON), Cody Caldwell (Cavan, ON), and Patrice Dagenais (Embrun, ON).
  • Cpl. Christopher Klodt, who became a quadriplegic while serving in Afghanistan and now is the face of the Soldier On program.
  •  Steve Verner (Ottawa, ON), who became a quadriplegic in a 2012 skydiving accident and has recently taken up wheelchair rugby.
  • Zak Madell (Okotoks, AB), who is considered one of the fastest-rising stars in the wheelchair rugby world.

The action will start at 10:30 am on May 16th. Opening Ceremonies will take place at 5:30 pm with a marquee game featuring the Ontario Thunder and Team BC to follow at 6:00 pm. Admission is free.
