By Lauri Jaakkola
Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas is a patron of the 2015 IWRF Wheelchair Rugby European Championship, held in Pajulahti, Finland from 13th to 20th of September. Bottas, a third season Formula One driver in Williams, is originally from the municipality of Nastola where the Pajulahti Sport Institute resides.
– Wheelchair rugby and Formula One are both fast sports. Luckily there are less contacts in Formula One, Bottas says.
Host team Finland is competing with seven other European countries in the European Championship. There are two places for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro at stake. Finland have never qualified for the Paralympic Games in wheelchair rugby but they stand a firm chance ahead of their home crowd in September.
Finland plays in Group B together with Denmark, Germany and Ireland. Group A is a clash between Great Britain, Sweden, France and Belgium. Top two teams from each group proceed to the semifinals played on Friday 18th of September. The winners of final get a ticket to Rio 2016.
Valtteri Bottas will not be present at the European Championship as he is competing in Singapore GP from 18th to 20th of September but he is sending his best of luck to all the players participating to the Games.
